Flooring Project Cost and Materials Calculator
Flooring estimates need more than room length times width. Waste, cuts, doorway transitions, closets, and imperfect room shapes can change how much material you need. This tool gives a transparent starting estimate.
Planning note
How this calculation works
- Base square footage is room length multiplied by room width.
- Adjusted square footage adds your waste percentage for cuts, pattern matching, damaged boards, and future repairs.
- Material totals combine flooring, optional underlayment, and a trim or transition allowance.
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculator assumes a rectangular main room and does not model every closet, hallway, stair, or angled wall.
- Some products are sold by carton, so your actual purchase may need to round up to full boxes.
- Labor, subfloor repair, disposal, delivery, and tools are not included unless you add them to the allowance.
Worked example
A 12 by 15 foot room is 180 square feet. With 10% waste, the shopping estimate becomes 198 square feet before box rounding.
FAQ
What waste percentage should I use?
Many simple layouts start around 5% to 10%. More complex rooms, diagonal layouts, or patterned products may need more.
Why is my installer's number different?
Installers may measure closets, hallways, cuts, box sizes, stair parts, transitions, and product-specific installation needs.
Should I include underlayment?
Include it only when your flooring type and subfloor call for it. Some products have attached pad or special requirements.
What should I ask a contractor?
Ask about subfloor prep, moisture testing, transitions, baseboards, disposal, acclimation, warranty requirements, and whether materials are rounded to full cartons.
